Ridley Terminals Inc. (RTI) operates a marine terminal on Ridley Island in Prince Rupert, BC, where bulk commodities such as coal are loaded onto ships. The terminal has approached its shipping capacity of 12 million tonnes per year and storage capacity of 1.2 million tonnes. The Capacity Realization Project will double the shipping capacity to 24 million tonnes by 2015.
Adventure Paving is involved in the expansion of the yard and expansion of the rail trackage. The existing yard will be expanded by 35 acres and a nine-acre lot will be built for storage. This leveling site work involves the drilling and blasting of 500,000 m3 of rock, resulting in 700,000 m3 of shot rock that will be hauled and placed, along with an additional 120,000 m3 of import rock. Adventure Paving has also supplied and placed 1.7 km of 300 mm and 350 mm steel-encased waterline.
The rail design-build part of the project involves the construction of a new rail embankment area 3.5 km long, which will accommodate additional rail tracks and some relocated existing track. The job includes the excavation, removal and disposal of 100,000 m3 of mud and the supply and placing of 90,000 tonnes of sub ballast and 55,000 tonnes of rail ballast.
